We’ve reached that part of the year when the top ten lists are showing up everywhere, and we can always count on the American Film Institute to unveil their own. AFI Awards have officially been announced, and the list of honorees includes the likes of Barbie and Oppenheimer.

AFI Awards were first introduced in 2000, and they’re meant to honor the top ten films and television programs, deemed as culturally and artistically representative of the year’s most significant cinematic achievements. Only American projects are eligible for this award, but the American Film Institute later introduced the AFI Special Award to recognize films and series filmed outside of the United States.

Some of the defining films of 2023 made it to AFI’s list this year, starting with Barbie and Oppenheimer, two films that inspired the viral Barbenheimer craze earlier this summer. Several major Oscar contenders also made the cut, including Killers of the Flower MoonPast Lives, and Poor Things.

When it comes to the TV side of the aisle, the list of this year’s winners includes several notable Emmy contenders, starting with Succession and The Bear. American Film Institute also recognized several rookie shows that premiered this year, including The Last of Us, Beef, Poker Face, and Jury Duty.
