2019 Oscar Nominations: Biggest Snubs and Surprises

Patrick Fugit, Ryan Gosling, and Shawn Eric Jones in "First Man"

This year’s list of contenders for an Oscar brought dozens of obvious choices and overdue nods, but it also featured several snubs and surprises most of us couldn’t see coming.

Surprise: Wakanda Forever!

Black Panther was one movie everyone was rooting for at this year’s Oscars, but to see it actually receive best picture nomination is truly ground-breaking and historic achievement.

Snub: A Star Is (Not) Born

A Star Is Born did an impressive job by scoring a total of eight nods, but the man who made it all happen – Bradley Cooper – was snubbed in the best director category.

Surprise: Roma Love

Yep, we knew Roma will receive a bunch of nominations at this year’s Oscars, but best supporting actress nod for Marina de Tavira was a huge shocker no one saw coming.

Snub: Acting Front-Runners

Experts were predicting Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) and Claire Foy (First Man) will make the cut after they received nods at every major awards ceremony, but that never happened. Same goes for Ethan Hawke who gave a career-defining performance in First Reformed.

Surprise: Best Picture Category

Only eight movies will be competing for best picture at this year’s ceremony, but front-runners If Beale Street Could Talk and First Man won’t be among them.

Snub: Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Everyone thought this Mr. Rogers documentary is pretty much a lock, but at least we have RBG to root for!
