The nominations for the Academy Awards are in, with Power of the Dog in the top spot with 12, but some of our favorite movies and performances of the past year failed to make the cut. Take a look at some of the biggest snubs and surprises at this year’s Oscars.

Snub: Lady Gaga, “House of Gucci”

Many experts were predicting that Lady Gaga will take the Oscar for the best actress for House of Gucci, but that will be impossible because she didn’t even get a nomination.

Surprise: “Drive My Car”

Drive My Car was a lock for the best international feature film nomination, but no one could’ve predicted it would take three more nods—including best picture and best director.

Snub: Denis Villeneuve, “Dune”

The Academy has shown a lot of love to Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune, giving it a total of 10 nominations. That’s why it’s even more shocking to see Villeneuve miss out on a nomination for the best director.

Surprise: Jessie Buckley, “The Lost Daughter”

Jessie Buckley failed to score nominations at most major award shows for her work on The Lost Daughter, but the Academy voters decided to nominate her in the best-supporting actress category over Belfast’s Caitriona Balfe.

Snub: “Passing”

Rebecca Hall knocked it out of the park with her directorial debut Passing, but it just wasn’t enough for the Academy. This movie was overlooked in all the categories, and the omission of the supporting actress Ruth Negga was especially jarring.
