The list of nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards is finally in, with American Fiction, May December, and Past Lives leading the way. Many impressive indie films received nods this year, but Indie Spirit voters ended up snubbing some pretty unexpected projects and performances.

No Love for Priscilla

Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla was always going to be a hard sell at the Oscars, but it should’ve been a lock at the Indie Spirit Awards. Expectations were running high, but this film didn’t receive any nominations—not even for its breakout star Cailee Spaeny.

Best Feature: The Holdovers

Despite being one of the top nominees with four nods, Alexander Payne’s latest film The Holdovers missed out on the best feature nomination.

Best Supporting Performance: Paul Mescal

Paul Mescal won the British Independent Film Award for his performance in All Of Us Strangers just a few days ago, but Indie Spirit voters showed him no love.

Best Lead Performance: Peter Sarsgaard

Peter Sarsgaard won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for Memory, but that wasn’t enough to earn him an Indie Spirit Award nod in the same category.

Best Breakthrough Performance: Bottoms Stars

Bottoms introduced us to many promising young actresses, including Ruby Cruz and Havana Rose Liu, so it was quite a shocker to see the best breakthrough performance nomination go to their co-star Marshawn Lynch instead.
