Making sense of food trends that originated from TikTok is pretty much a waste of time—you either have to accept them or simply move on. That’s certainly the case with bell pepper sandwiches which are currently taking the world by storm.

Breadless sandwiches are not a novelty in the culinary world—they’ve been around for a long time, and bell peppers are far from being the only veggie you can make them with, but it’s currently the most popular. TikTok put these snacks back on the map, describing it as a keto-friendly and low-carb option.

Just like many food trends that went viral this year, bell pepper sandwiches are super-easy to make. The shape of these veggies makes them a convenient bread alternative because they’ll keep the rest of your sandwich ingredients from falling out—but some people feel it’s wrong to describe them as sandwiches in the first place.

Fitness influencer Lucy Mountain called out this trend, saying that the viral bell paper sandwich is simply a very small salad. Celebrity cook Gordon Ramsay wasn’t too impressed by it, either, and called it “an idiot sandwich”, making a reference to his famous catchphrase.
