Everywhere we turn we can’t seem to escape corsets—the lingerie trend that’s become totally every day. And where there are corsets, there are “butterfly tails”, the latest addition to corsets. Butterfly tails are the garter straps that hang from the bottom of corsets, that are commonly strapped to thigh-high tights. It’s the extra detail corset tops were missing. What started on the runway has now been rocked by celebrities and trendsetters.

Butterfly tails were first seen on the Fall 2021 runways at Christain Siriano and Gucci’s Aria show. At Siriano’s show, there was a lace corset that was layered over a structured top and paired with black pants with chains where the garter straps would be. Gucci showed a more equestrian version which included a black corset layered over a long green maxi dress.

Gossip Girl actress Jordan Alexander wore a Wiederhoeft outfit to the show’s premiere in NYC with garter straps and bow details. The corset perfectly matched her mask, which was a statement in itself.

While we’re just starting to see butterfly tails take off, they started in early 2020, during the early part of the pandemic. But now with everyone dressing up again and leaving their homes, it’s finally having a moment. They’re great for summer and they go with skirts, jeans, and dresses—so pretty much any bottom.
