Celebrities are Joining in on the Viral “Elf on the Shelf” Meme

Have you been scrolling through Instagram and come across celebrities posting photos of themselves with things that rhyme with their name? If you’re wondering what it’s all about, as we were, it’s part of the Elf on the Shelf meme. Some of the celebrities who’ve gotten into the Christmas meme include Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, Elizabeth Banks, Luke Bryan, Ryan Seacrest, Kerry Washington, and Mariah Carey.

We’re not sure where the meme originated, but celebrities seem to be having lots of fun with the challenge. Pretty much it’s celebrities posting red carpet photos of themselves and photoshopping a tiny person that rhymes with their first or last name. Banks was one of the first to join in on the meme and she photographed Tom Bank in Forest Gump on her shoulder making Hank on Banks. She captioned the post, “I know you’ve all heard of Elf on a Shelf, but have you heard of… (Inspired by @garcelle) #MyElf”.

The meme is a play on Elf on the Shelf, a popular holiday game where kids try and find an elf doll around the house. The game was inspired by Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell’s 2005 children’s picture book, The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition, which tells the story of elves who spy on children from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve to report to Santa Clause about who’s night and who’s nice.
