Everything You Need to Know About “Lupin”, Netflix’s Latest Surprise Hit

Omar Sy in "Lupin"

If you still haven’t seen Lupin on Netflix, now’s the perfect time to put it on your watch list. This French mystery series is projected to become one of the biggest hits to date on this streaming service, but what is it actually about, and how did it manage to find such overnight success?

Intriguing Plot

According to the official logline, this series centers on gentleman thief Assane Diop (Omar Sy) who sets out to avenge his father for an injustice inflicted by a wealthy family, drawing inspiration from the adventures of the iconic character Arsène Lupin.

Critical Acclaim

The critics have been kind to Lupin since its premiere on January 8th, and it currently holds a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Slate’s Karen Han even described it as “an early front-runner to steal a spot as one of the best shows of the year.”

International Hit

Only a few days after its premiere, Lupin became the first French series to rank among the top 10 of Netflix in the United States. It’s also projected to reach 70 million in its first 28 days on this streaming platform, beating the likes of Bridgerton and The Queen’s Gambit.

Future Plans

It also doesn’t hurt Lupin’s case that its five addictive episodes are easy to go through, but there’s more on the way. Part 2 is coming to Netflix later this year, but it still doesn’t have an official release date.
