Expect to See These 2020 Food Trends

2019 was all about a move towards health and wellness, clean-eating, and plant-based products, but 2019 is almost over and with a new year come new trends. Will there still be a shift towards healthy eating? Here’s what to expect from the food and beverage industry in 2020.

Healthy Snacks

Snacking is inevitable and when you lead a busy lifestyle it’s hard not to grab a quick snack. Snacking used to be about grabbing a bag of chips, some cookies, or a candy bar, but recently there’s been a shift toward healthier alternatives. Popped and puffed snacks and protein and plant-based snacks are expected to gain in popularity.

Concept Kitchens

We all like to see how our food is prepared; it’s part of the experience, right? These kitchens are the most sanitary and these use the freshest ingredients, which adds to the culinary experience. Restaurants like Subway and Chipotle have been using this concept for a while, but fine dining restaurants are hopping on this trend.

Fermented Beverages & Non-Alcoholic Drinks

Alcoholic drinks are high in sugar and calories and they can leave you feeling terrible the next day. Alcohol still water, which is spiked water beverages without the bubbles, is going to be a popular choice, especially among millennials. Kombucha is also expected to continue being a forerunner in the drink industry.

Zero-Waste

Did you know that around 1.3 billion tons of edible food is wasted every year? This is only going to increase by 2025 with 2.2 billion food expected to be thrown away. Supermarkets throw vegetables and fruits away because they don’t look “perfect” or they are misshapen. What a waste! Governments and organizations have decided to make food waste a major priority this coming year.
