Horror movies did a great job bringing the audience back to theaters this year, and it was just a matter of time before Netflix embraced this trend. The streaming giant threw their hat into the horror ring with the new horror series Fear Street, based on the books by R. L. Stine.

Stine’s best-selling teen horror book series started coming out in 1989, and this wasn’t the first attempt to adapt them to the screen. Several studios, including Hollywood Pictures and 20th Century Fox, considered developing them into a movie franchise before Netflix jumped on board and actually made it happen.

Directed by Leigh Janiak, Netflix’s Fear Street currently consists of three films: Part One: 1994, Part Two: 1978, and Part Three: 1666. They’re all set during different time periods, feature a different set of characters, and even belong to different genres, ranging from teen slasher to supernatural horror.

One thing all Fear Street movies have in common is the setting in the fictional town of Shadyside, where teens encounter all sorts of evil forces. The first film in the series, Fear Street Part One: 1994 was released on July 2th, with two sequels meant to follow in the next two weeks. The reviews have generally been positive, but we’re still waiting for Netflix to share an update about potential sequels.
