Sigourney Weaver has confirmed that Avatar 4 and 5 are going ahead.

Director James Cameron is taking his time with the Avatar sequels after the phenomenal original premiered in 2009 smashed it at the box office. It has recently been confirmed that filming for the second and third installments have wrapped up. Sigourney Weaver has also revealed that preparations for the fourth and fifth Avatar films have already begun.

She told The Hollywood Reporter that she is “busy” with 4 & 5 and explained why there are so many sequels in the works: “It’s kind of one story. They’re all independent. It works without four and five, but it really is a big saga.”

The upcoming Avatar movies will take place in the underwater world of the planet Pandora. The cast has had to act underwater to ensure that the movie is totally authentic.

“I think that [the movies will change the cinema experience] because the water becomes another world,” Weaver revealed.

“The scripts are amazing, and in the first one, which I love, I think he hadn’t set up a lot of things. In this one, he got to tell this very personal story. They’re amazing. There’s a message to not sacrifice everything for greed and conquest. It will take all four movies to really make that message loud and clear for the whole world.”

The scheduled releases for the upcoming movies are as follows:

Avatar 2: December 18, 2020
Avatar 3: December 17, 2021
Avatar 4: December 20, 2024
Avatar 5: December 19, 2025
