Matcha and golden milk lattes are super trendy, but the latest coffee trend has little to do with your morning brew. It has to do with the part of the coffee plant that’s usually discarded while preparing coffee beans. This trendy new ingredient is coffee fruit, specifically coffee fruit extract, and some even consider it to be the latest superfood. So what exactly is coffee fruit and is it as healthy as people are claiming it to be?

You may be surprised to know that coffee beans come from coffee fruit, which is also called coffee berries or coffee cherries. It’s a small fruit that grows green and turns purple or red when it ripens. Usually, the beans are removed from the fruit for processing and the fruit is thrown away.

While you won’t find the whole fruit at the supermarket, you’re likely to find bottled extract made from the fruit. Coffee fruit, unlike black coffee, is mild and sweet with a similar taste to cherries or hibiscus. You can add a few drops to your coffee or tea or blend it into smoothies.

Coffee fruit is high in antioxidants and nutrients, which help fight off chronic diseases and cell damage. It’s less caffeinated than coffee beans but still gives you energy. So if you’re looking for a boost of energy without having a crash, coffee fruit is a great solution.
