According to reports, the New York Rangers will look to buy out the final year of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist’s contract, ending his legendary tenure with the team after 15 years.

Lundqvist will be remembered as one of the greatest goalies in team history and is already recognized as one of the greatest to ever play in the NHL. Only five other goaltenders in the history of the league have more career wins than Lundqvist.

He won the Vezina Award in 2012, when he was recognized as the best goaltender in the league. He was also named to the NHL All-Star team five times.

The only thing missing from Lundqvist’s brilliant resume, however, is the most important piece – a Stanley Cup. The Rangers were able to get to the Stanley Cup Finals once during Lundqvist’s career, in 2014, but were unable to win.

New York is moving on with two potential goaltenders ready to take over for Lundqvist. Both Igor Shesterkin and Alexandar Georgiev saw playing time in 2020.

Lundqvist has yet to announce whether he is going to retire or look to join another team and continue his professional career elsewhere.
