It’s been so long since Rihanna dropped her last studio album that the lack of new music from her became a running joke. The wait for her next studio effort has lasted for almost five years, but is it finally going to end in 2021?
Rihanna welcomed the New Year by posting a photo by the pool in a glitzy golden ensemble, and captioned it writing, “new year’s resolution: apply the pressure”. When one fan suggested she should release an album instead, the singer replied “this comment is sooo 2019, grow up.”
Judging by this comment, we shouldn’t be too optimistic about the prospect of R9, but it could happen. She’s been dropping hints about this album for quite some time, most recently in an interview with Associated Press in October.
“Everything is so heavy … The world that we live in, a lot is overwhelming every single day. And music, I’m using that as my outlet. I just want to have fun with that,” explained Rihanna.
Her next album is taking longer than expected since she’s been focusing her attention on other business endeavors. Since Anti came out in 2016, Rihanna launched several fashion and beauty brands, including Fenty Beauty, Fenty, Savage X Fenty, and Fenty Skin. It’s also been rumored she’s working on a cookbook and plotting an activewear line, so we’ll have to wait and see if she manages to fit some sessions at the recording studio into her busy schedule.
