Marvel fans are once again digging into X-Men casting chatter, this time after rumors linked Adam Driver to a new version of Magneto. The role has previously been associated with Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen, with McKellen also set to return to the character in Avengers: Doomsday. Because Magneto is such a major figure in the X-Men mythos, any casting talk around the part tends to draw immediate attention.
The speculation picked up steam on social media after Marvel scoop accounts began circulating Driver’s name. That in turn set off a wave of fan reactions, with many arguing that the actor has the intensity and screen presence to anchor a major Marvel role. Some fans pointed to his work in the Star Wars sequel trilogy as proof that he could handle a high-profile franchise reboot.
The chatter arrives as Marvel moves ahead with a new, youth-focused X-Men project that is expected after Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. The film is being directed by Jake Schreier, who is also behind Thunderbolts and The New Avengers, and is being treated as an important piece of Marvel’s next phase. There is already plenty of fan speculation around other possible mutant castings too, including theories that Sadie Sink’s role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day could turn out to be Jean Grey, while Inde Navarette’s recent meeting with Schreier has also fueled guesses about which X-Men character she might play.
For now, the X-Men reboot still appears to be in its early stages, with Marvel’s larger multiverse storyline set to wrap with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. According to the report, Secret Wars is also expected to function as a kind of reset, opening the door for new versions of familiar characters to exist alongside the studio’s surviving heroes. Whether Driver is actually part of that plan remains unconfirmed, but the rumor mill is already running at full speed.
