The coronavirus has disrupted theaters this year and lead to the delay of many highly anticipated movies. Disney tried to find a way to adapt to the global pandemic by canceling the theatrical release of several projects and making them available on Disney+.
Artemis Fowl
The story of a criminal child prodigy trying to find his father was the first Disney project to forgo its theatrical release and premiere exclusively on the studio’s streaming platform.
Hamilton
Hamilton is probably the only project that found success with its digital release so far. Critics were kind to the movie adaptation of the beloved musical and over a third of Disney+ subscribers tuned in to watch it.
The One and Only Ivan
This star-studded fantasy film hit Disney+ in late August and it tells the tale of a gorilla named Ivan who tries to escape from captivity with the help of an elephant named Ruby.
Mulan
Mulan was released theatrically in several countries where theaters had re-opened, but it was also made available for purchase on Disney+. The price point of $29.99 angered the public, but Disney CEO Bob Chapek felt it was the only way to return the investment.
Soul
Pixar’s latest movie was subject to several delays and it will arrive at Disney+ on Christmas. It centers on a struggling musician who is transported out of his body and must find his way back.
