If you thought mushroom coffee was weird, wait until you hear about broccoli coffee. We thought we had seen it all after whipped coffee and cloud bread, but broccoli coffee is the latest trend taking the world by storm. This coffee seems like the perfect solution for getting in five servings of vegetables a day. So what is broccoli coffee all about?
Originating in Australia, scientists at Australia’s chief research organization, CSIRO, created a broccoli powder to combat poor nutrition and food waste. Made from whole broccoli and “produced using a combination of selected pre-treatment and drying processes to retain the natural colour, flavour and nutrient composition of fresh broccoli,” the purpose of the powder is to add variety to food and drinks, including coffee. In fact, two tablespoons equals one full serving of vegetables.
The powder still isn’t out of the market yet, but it’s being tested out at Melbourne cafe, Commonfolk, with mixed reviews, as some people can’t seem to get past the broccoli taste.
If the broccoli coffee called the brocolatte doesn’t take off, the powder could still be used in smoothies, soups, and bakes.
With broccoli as the latest food item to be added to coffee, we’re just left wondering what’s next. We happen to think that coffee shouldn’t be messed with as it’s best as it is.
