2022 has been a huge year for tennis, and if there’s one thing it will be remembered by, it’s the retirements of beloved players who made us fall in love with this game. Several tennis greats recently announced they’re hanging up their rackets, and here are three major retirements that took the whole world by storm.

Roger Federer

With 20 Grand Slam titles under his belt, Roger Federer is one of the biggest ATP legends of his generation—but all good things must come to an end. After several years plagued with injuries that impacted his performance, the Swiss player announced his decision to step away from tennis in an emotional statement last week.

Serena Williams

Serena Williams is one of the first names that comes to mind when someone mentions tennis. She went down in history as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, winning 23 Grand Slam singles titles, before announcing her retirement. She played her last match at this year’s US Open, bidding farewell to her fans and the game she loves so much.

Ashleigh Barty

Unlike Federer and Williams, Ashleigh Barty isn’t in her 40s and doesn’t have decades of experience under her belt, but that didn’t stop her from announcing her retirement. Two months after winning the Australian Open in her home country, she shocked the tennis world by announcing her exit while she was still the no. 1 WTA player in the world.
