Hollywood and the movie industry will never be the same following the pandemic. Theaters were closed and studios had to postpone production and releases to next year or send movies to streaming services or digital rental platforms. Even when theaters opened, titles were available online sooner than usual, affecting box office sales. Here are some of the changes 2020 brought to the industry.

90-Day Window

To this year, studio’s newest blockbusters had to play in cinemas for 90 days before they could be released to home entertainment. But now instead of a neat model, many think it would be better for studios to determine based on the film how long the movies stay in theaters. An example of this was with the hybrid release of Wonder Woman 1984, which was released in theaters and on HBO Max Christmas day.

Releasing Films of Platforms

New movies have skipped theaters and gone straight to streaming platforms. Netflix has realeased David Fincher’s Mank, Spike Lee’s Da Five Blood, George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky, and Aaron Sorkin The Trial of the Chicago 7 in 2020. Apple, Amazon, and Hulu also released new films including Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks, Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, and Lee Daniels’ upcoming The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

Ryan Murphy’s latest Netflix show Ratched took us on the journey of the origin story of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’s villain, Nurse Ratched. In the eight-episode series, we saw the nurse go from bitter to a full-out monster to her patients during her early days at Lucia State Hospital and we’re hoping the show gets a second season. The series was a mix of comedy with slasher flicks and it followed the murders committed by a serial killer that took place on a college campus. The target for the murders was the Kappa House sorority which was run by Chanel (Emma Roberts), and the rest of the cast included Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin, Billie Lourd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Grande, and Nick Jonas.

The Politician

The Politician, starring Ben Platt as rich kid Payton, premiered in 2019 and has had two seasons on Netflix. Payton dreams of becoming President, but first, he must navigate his way through high school. In the second season, he fights for a seat in the State Senate.

American Horror Story

If you can’t get enough of Sarah Paulson, be sure to watch American Horror Story which has a similar feel to Ratched. You’ll also see Ratched actors Jon Jon Briones (Dr. Hanover) and Finn Wittrock (Edmund Tolleson). AHS is an anthology of stories that takes place in a house with a deadly secret, a demented asylum, a witch coven, a hotel, an unusual show, a cult, and an apocalypse. There are nine seasons, so you’ll be busy for a while with this one.

The 2020 drama takes place in post-World War II Hollywood with aspiring actors and filmmakers doing whatever it takes to make their dreams of appearing in showbusiness come true.

Crazy Rich Asians is a contemporary romantic comedy based on a bestseller by Kevin Kwan. The story follows New Yorker Rachel Chu to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family. The plot is cute and promising, but the film’s success surpassed all the expectations.

One factor is the fact that all the actors are Asian, besides the main actress who’s Asian-American. The movie has the qualities to become the future classic in its genre, just like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Sleepless in Seattle did.

The producers worked hard on gathering the cast from outside of the US and avoiding familiar stereotypes. Within the first week, Crazy Rich Asians grossed $26 million.

The interest in Asian culture has been growing over the past years – for example, the Korean cosmetics sales have quadrupled in the US since 2015.
