]]>Recording artists come with many creative ways to put their new songs on the map. Alternative music videos are a pretty common strategy these days, and here are three artists who recently topped the charts after embracing it.
Lil Nas X did such a great job promoting “Montero” that he didn’t even need to release alternative music videos, but he still did it. The official video was followed by several silly renditions, including one inside the bathroom of hell, a fake official video that shows random clips of the singer and his friends, and a lo-fi version that you can study to.
Like many fellow artists, Cardi B shared the audio and lyrics video of her latest chart-topping single “Up”, but she didn’t stop there. She also dropped a “mood board visualizer” featuring behind-the-scenes photos and footage about a month after the original video came out.
Justin Bieber often uses this strategy to give his new singles a push, and he’s doing it again with his latest single “Peaches”. In addition to the official music video featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon, you can find several alternative videos for this track on his YouTube channel.

]]>One of the easiest ways to create a lot of buzz for your music video is having a couple of celebrities make a surprise appearance. Many of our favorite artists embraced this strategy in 2020 and gave us amazing cameo-filled videos along the way. Here are some of the best of 2020.
Katy Perry is the latest artist to give us a music video starring an A-list star. Her lookalike Zooey Deschanel takes the lead in this hilarious video that shows her being abducted by aliens and saving the Earth from destruction.
If we had to pick the most talked-about star-studded music video of 2020, it would definitely be “WAP”. It featured appearances from Normani, Rosalía, Mulatto, Sukihana, Rubi Rose, and a short cameo from Kylie Jenner that left people both excited and confused.
Stallion gave us another star-studded music video with “Body”, with cameo appearances from Taraji P. Henson, Blac Chyna, Jordyn Woods, Maliibu Miitch, and more.
DJ Khaled and Drake gave us one of their biggest hits of 2020 with “Popstar”, but it was Justin Bieber’s surprise appearance that got everyone talking about this music video.
Beyoncé never had any trouble convincing her A-list friends to appear in her videos, and this one featured appearances from Naomi Campbell, Lupita Nyong’o, Kelly Rowland, and her daughters Blue Ivy and Rumi Carter.

]]>We’re just days away from this year being over, and while most things haven’t been great this year, music has been one of the saving graces. Artists have delivered hit after hit and these music videos were the ones everyone couldn’t stop talking about in 2020. Did your favorites make the list?
Grande is a ’90s kid at heart and her inspiration for this video clearly came from Austin Power’s fembots. The singer plays the platform boot-wearing scientist as well as the lead fembot.
Bad Bunny brought the party to us in the “Yo Perreo Sola” music video in which he dresses up in drag and looks fabulous.
Artists have had to get creative during the pandemic and Bridgers shot the entire video for “Kyoto” on a green screen. She explores all of the world—flying over oceans, surfing the Japanese railway, and fight Godzilla, while wearing a skeleton suit.
This ’70s fantasy is complete with crochet and disco-glam outfits. There’s even homage to the TikTok dance that made the song a hit.
This psychedelic remix to The Weeknd’s “In Your Eyes” featuring Doja Cat takes you on a psychedelic trip complete with animated characters of the singers, rainbow roads, and moving planets.

]]>If you need more proof that women can do it all, just take a look at the music videos of some of your favorite female artists. Many of them have shown us another hidden talent by self-directing their own music videos in the last few months.
Billie Eilish filmed her latest music video with an iPhone at an empty shopping mall. To make the whole thing even more impressive, “Therefore I Am” isn’t her first self-directed visual since she previously helmed music videos for “Xanny” and “Everything I Wanted”.
Miley Cyrus’ disco-tinged and ‘80s-inspired single “Midnight Sky” perfectly captures her new edgy approach to music and she took full control of its visual representation by directing the music video on her own.
Swift previously won the MTV VMA award for best direction with “The Man”, but what makes “Cardigan” equally impressive is that she also did her own styling, makeup, hair, and everything else in between, in addition to directing the music video.
Most people will remember Taylor’s song “Lose Each Other” for the unexpected Elton John cameo, but we’re more impressed by the fact she was in charge of directing the whole thing on her own.

]]>It’s impossible to make lavish music videos with high production value in quarantine, but our favorite artists are still trying to get creative and surprising their fans by dropping impressive visuals they filmed at home.
Drake gave us a sneak peek inside his lavish Toronto mansion and started another viral dance challenge with the music video for his latest chart-topping single “Toosie Slide”.
The entire visual for Kehlani’s new track “Everybody Business” was filmed in her backyard and around her neighborhood, and she even directed it herself.
Lauv reflected on the way we use social media while social distancing in the “Modern Loneliness” video, which shows his iPhone screen as he switches from one app to the next.
In addition to filming and editing music videos on their own, many artists are currently asking their fans to pitch in. That’s exactly what OneRepublic did with “Better Days”, which features short clips of their fans’ experiences in quarantine.
