Twitter has gone through many changes under Elon Musk’s reign, and the latest may be the most puzzling one yet. The iconic Twitter blue bird has flown away into the unknown after the new Twitter boss decided to rebrand this social media platform as “X” and unveiled a new logo.

Musk teased the change in a series of cryptic tweets – including, “soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds” before the company’s CEO Linda Yaccarino released a more formal statement announcing the rebranding.

“It’s an exceptionally rare thing – in life or in business – that you get a second chance to make another big impression. Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square,” she wrote in a statement.

Twitter introduced a new black-and-white logo, which Musk described as an “interim logo”, leaving the door open for future changes. This rebrand is just the latest extension of Musk’s fixation on the letter X, after he implemented the letter in many of his past projects, from his first startup X.com to his space-exploration company SpaceX.

Musk’s move to change a name of a well-recognizable brand is truly puzzling, but it’s not the first questionable decision he made since taking over Twitter. From introducing paid verification service Twitter Blue to limiting the number of daily tweets and DMs, many of the recent Twitter changes were met with confusion and led users to turn to other social media platforms, such as newly-launched Threads.

Even though Dune hasn’t been released yet, it’s already getting tons of buzz. Warner Bros. teamed up with Twitter as part of its larger marketing campaign for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune for a weeklong takeover of the @TwiiterMovies account to promote the film, which will be released in theaters and HBO Max on October 22. The takeover started on Monday and will go through the end of the week, with the account fully dedicated to Dune.

This is the first time Twitter has worked with a partner for a weeklong takeover of any company-owned account. The account’s profile features a Dune-themed avatar and header image. User tweets with the hashtag #DuneWeek will trigger a custom Twitter emoji. The takeover features fan Q&As with Villeneuve and the movie’s stars including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Issac, and Rebecca Ferguson. There are also videos with the cast discussing the film, memes, and emojis.

Twitter worked with the studio to create 12 custom Twitter emojis for the movie’s stars and their characters including #PaulAtreides, #Chani, #DukeLeto, and #LadyJessica.

“Audiences have been eagerly anticipating ‘Dune’ for well over a year, and Twitter has been the platform where they’ve congregated: fans of the book, fans of our exceptional talent and new fans of the franchise,” said Andrew Hotz, EVP, worldwide digital marketing and chief data scientist, Warner Bros.

If you were on the internet in 2015, you were probably as captivated as the rest of the world by a viral Twitter thread made by Aziah “Zola” Wells about her falling out with an ex-friend “Jessica,” which spanned 148 tweets and captured the attention of millions.

So it’s no surprise that the wild story that unfolded in real-time on Twitter, engaging, entertaining, and outraging people as it went along, was adapted into a feature film that was just released called @zola.

Just like the Twitter thread, Zola, starring Taylour Paige and Riley Keough, tells the story of a waitress who gets caught up in a weekend of partying in Florida that turns into a wild, two-day adventure that would seem fake if you didn’t already know it was true.

Critics are loving the film, with Rolling Stone saying it “capitalizes not only on the viral nature of the original story but on the flashpoint of our specific tweet and app-addled, gig economized, bats**t moment.”

If you’re not yet convinced you want to watch it, you should know that the film is being distributed by A24, the company behind massive indie hits like Eighth Grade, Midsommar, The Farewell, Moonlight, and Lady Bird.

There’s a new feature on Twitter and it will look very familiar if you spend time on other social platforms. It’s called Fleets and it’s Twitter’s version of Instagram Stories—instant visual posts that disappear after 24 hours.

Similar features have been a part of social networks like Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook, and Twitter’s new feature will be here very soon if it’s not already in your app.

Twitter has been testing Fleets since March 2020 in countries like Italy, Brazil, and India, and they have now decided they should include them for all users. “Because they disappear from view after a day, Fleets helped people feel more comfortable sharing personal and casual thoughts, opinions, and feelings,” the company explained in a press release.

Unlike tweets, Fleets don’t allow likes, retweets, or replies—you can only reply to them in Direct Messages. Their main use should be casual, for thoughts you don’t want on your account permanently. We still have to see how things will play out with this new feature and if it’s going to be as popular on Twitter as it is on other platforms.

Twitter is a great indicator of rising trends in all spheres of life, including the culinary world. The social network recently composed the “Twitter from Home” report based on the data collected over the course of the past six months, and chicken and bread were the most-tweeted-about foods during this period.

Twitter’s new report sheds light on “what people in the U.S. have been listening to, watching, eating, and doing to stay connected and entertained” in quarantine. The list of trending foods was topped by chicken, with bread and cake right behind.

Chicken emerged as the no. 1 food trend of the year thanks to the beloved Popeye’s chicken sandwiches, but it was also trending on Twitter after McDonald’s announced it would debut its spicy chicken nuggets. The popularity of bread is a no-brainer since everyone tried to bake their own sourdough and banana bread at home.

Cakes were also having a moment this year, especially thanks to the viral “everything is cake” meme that showcases food artists responsible for baking super-realistic cakes. The rest of Twitter’s list was filled by other beloved comfort foods, including cookies, cheese, and chocolate.

There’s a new feature on Twitter that allows you more control over who gets to interact with your tweets. The company’s director of product management, Suzanne Xie, announced a new update on January 8th, 2020 in Las Vegas, saying it will change the way people interact with tweets. We can soon expect Twitter starting to test the new feature that allows the poster to control who can reply to their tweets.

As expected, people are having mixed feelings about this, but the company decided to do it in an attempt to make the users feel safer on the platform. The new feature should help curb online harassment in the replies section as each person will have a saying in who gets to interact with them and who doesn’t.

Apparently, each Twitter user will have four options when it comes to replying settings and they will control the people allowed into the conversation. The options will be global, group, panel, and statement. If you choose “global,” you’re allowing everyone who wants to reply to your tweet. The “group” setting only gives the people you follow or mention reply to you, while “panel” limits those able to reply to just people you mention in the particular tweet. You can also choose the “statement” setting, which doesn’t allow any replies.

When you hear the words “social media trend”, you probably think that something bad happened again, right? Not this time. #Trashtag is the latest popular challenge that makes people clean their surrounding and post the “before and after” photos on social media to inspire others.

Many families and groups of friends joined the challenge and started cleaning around them. Parks, beaches, and the road sides are getting clean and social networks like Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit are filled with photos that prove it.

The #trashtag hashtag has been around since 2016, but it only recently became popular. It’s different from other challenge hashtags in many ways — it promotes spending time outdoors and doing something good for nature, among other things.

You can join the movement without having to post anything on social media and make the world around you a little bit better. Of course, you can also post some photos and inspire others to do the same.
