This year’s Oscar race is heating up as many of the year’s highly-anticipated movies premiered at major film festivals, and another one just threw its hat into the ring. Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth recently saw the light of day, and it’s receiving some major Oscar buzz.

Coen’s take on one of William Shakespeare’s seminal plays had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, where it was met with overwhelmingly positive receptions. It currently holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with high praise for its leads Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, but is it poised to become an Oscar front-runner?

It’s too early to say how well will Macbeth fare in the Best Picture race since the field was pretty crowded even before it came out. The Power of the Dog was hailed as one of the front runners before Belfast won the People’s Choice Award at TIFF, and some people are still putting their money on Dune since it broke the mold for sci-fi and action movies.

Whatever happens in the race for Best Picture, Washington and McDormand will most likely get nominations for their stellar performances. You can decide for yourself if this film is worth the hype when it gets a limited theatrical release on Christmas, or wait until January 14, 2022 to see it on Apple TV+.
