Timothée Chalamet is one of the most up-and-coming stars and he’s set to play chocolatier Willy Wonka in Wonka, a prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Even though we have to wait until March 17, 2023, for the film to be released, the actor dropped the first look of him as the iconic character and it sent the media into a frenzy. It didn’t take long for the memes to start.

In the post, Chalamet is wearing a velvet burgundy jacket, a silk necktie, and Wonka’s iconic brown top hat while looking beyond the camera. He captioned the post, “The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last…”, which is a line spoken by Gene Wilder’s Wonka in the 191 adaptation of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

Some people didn’t realize Chalamet was cast as Wonka, thinking the post was a joke, others were thrilled to find out about the casting.

And some people couldn’t believe how much his outfit resembled the one Gonzo wears in The Muppet Christmas Carol. You have to admit—they do look really similar.

The actor even joined in on the memes, retweeting a fan edit that used the “Oompa Loompa Song” from the original film and the “Timmy Tim” video.

Here are some other reactions to Chamalet as Wonka. We collected our favorites.
