Traveling in Times of the Pandemic

Alice Yeh, aka Alice in Wandererland, admits she’s always up for an adventure and spontaneous last-minute trips. Born in the suburbs of Philadelphia to Taiwanese immigrant parents, Yeh says she’s always been fully aware of her cultural background. This sense of multicultural awareness was amplified the family’s summer vacations, which in turn also fueled Yeh’s love for travel and discovering new things.

After quitting her cushy day job at Google in June 2018, Yeh decided to answer her life calling. Adventure awaited, and Yeh was up for the challenge. “Since I like to do things a little differently from other people, I’ve always managed to find ways to go against the grain,” she writes on her blog. “I wanted a change of pace from the corporate life. I used this break to travel (shocking I know!), learn Spanish, and become a certified yoga teacher. During this time off, I also started this blog as a pet project so we’ll see where this goes.”

According to Yeh, she has been lucky to call Philadelphia, New York, Hong Kong, London, Singapore, and now San Francisco home. “Living abroad made it easy to visit neighboring countries,” she writes. “As a result, I have visited 50+ countries so far and still counting!” Living abroad also means exploring local cuisines, and Yeh has a dedicated Instagram account to her food explorations.

But how does the life of a food/travel blogger even look in the age of COVID-19? A recent blog post by Yeh might shed some light, as she documents her first flight during the pandemic. “After quarantining at home for 4 months, I really needed to scratch my travel itch,” she writes. “Stir crazy would be an understatement.” According to Yeh, she noticed 6 key differences, two of which are the empty lines and the emphasis on social distance.

“Honestly, I felt pretty safe given all things considered,” she concludes. “But I had such low expectations after reading about other people’s first flight experiences during the pandemic. I was quite nervous and anxious that we may have made a mistake to be so risky to fly. But overall, my flights were very smooth and actually, dare I say, pleasant.”

We wish her luck on her upcoming journeys.
