With COVID-19 leading to a surge in e-commerce and more indie brands embracing the digital revolution, ditching mass-produced fashion has never been easier. One brand we’ve got our eyes on this summer is Tree Fairfax. Founded in Virginia by designer Tricia Fairfax Hash the small brand offers unique handmade leather goods using locally sourced, high-quality leather.
According to Fairfax Hash, each piece is made by hand and is truly one-of-a-kind, as she aims to incorporate natural flaws of each leather hide that she works with. Incorporating imperfections in her designs also means cutting back on waste, making the brand more sustainable.
Another key element to Fairfax Hash’s designs is her accessories’ weight. According to the small business owner, each of her bags are created so that you can move around lightly, carrying only what you need in your beautiful, handcrafted leather bag. “I like to move around lightly, no restrictions or heaviness,” she further explained in an interview with The Particulars. “I like to keep everything easy and kind of out of my way when I am out and about. So I created my minimal bags because I wanted something that would make my life easier.”
Her lightweight accessories include a half-moon handbag that puts a limit on what you carry with you, as well as tote bag that allows you to carry more items. “I also kept in mind that not every person is the same, we are all unique and we need options when it comes to handbag straps,” notes Fairfax Hash. “I wear a size 14 and I have broad shoulders. I need a longer strap for my handbag to fit my body shape, so I offer several length options because one size does not fit all.”
Her muse? First and foremost her mother. “I love to look back at my mother’s old photos, she has always been really stylish, creative with her clothes and accessories,” says Fairfax Hash. “She would take a wrap belt from her dress and tie it to her straw hat to make her outfit pop. I love that!”
