Although video games have a huge influence on pop culture, only a few television shows and movies have managed to capture the vibe of gaming to the screen. But with the rise of Sonic the Hedgehog and Netflix’s The Witcher, this seems to be changing in 2020.

Sonic the Hedgehog had the best box office opening of any video game adaptation, earning over $70 million in its opening weekend. Despite the initial reluctance from fans of the game, the reviews for the film have been positive.

Netflix’s The Witcher had the platform’s biggest debut, and it’s one of the most popular shows of 2020.

In 2019, Pokémon Detective Pikachu earned over $430 million in box office revenue worldwide.

Still to come in September 2020 are Monster Hunter, a movie based on Capcom’s video game series, and Without Remorse, a movie based on the Rainbow Six games and movies.

There are about 15 more upcoming video game movies and TV shows to look forward to, including a movie adaptation of the shooting game Borderlands, a live-action TV series based on Final Fantasy XIV, a Resident Evil TV series, Minecraft the Movie, and an adaptation of Uncharted.
