Netflix’s A Toxic Love Story revisits a case that began as a bitter breakup and spiraled into a stunning false accusation saga. Michelle Hadley, who met Ian Diaz on a dating app in 2013, says their relationship initially felt serious and promising. The pair got engaged and bought a condo together in June 2015, but they split that August and Hadley moved out. In the documentary, she acknowledges sending a few angry emails after the breakup, but she denies the much darker allegations that later followed.
According to the report, things changed in early 2016 after Diaz began seeing Angela Connell, whom he met at a Starbucks in Anaheim. They married the next month, and Connell moved into the condo Diaz had shared with Hadley. By June, Connell had filed a police report claiming she was receiving threatening messages from an account called “Lilithistruth.” She and Diaz both pointed to Hadley as the likely source. Later that month, police were told that someone had used Connell’s photos in a Craigslist account tied to a rape fantasy ad, and after Connell reported being attacked in the garage, Hadley was arrested that night.
How the case unraveled
Hadley spent 88 days in jail before being released in October 2016. Prosecutors later determined that the emails had been sent by Connell herself, and that she had also arranged the Craigslist activity using VPNs and proxy servers. Hadley was fully cleared, and the charges against her were dropped in January 2017. Connell was arrested that same month and later pleaded guilty to charges including kidnapping and falsely reporting a crime to a peace officer. She was sentenced to five years in prison in October 2017.
The story did not end there. Diaz was later convicted in 2023 of cyberstalking, conspiracy, perjury, and obstruction, and is now serving a 10-year federal prison sentence. According to the Department of Justice, he worked with Connell to frame Hadley in an effort to keep a condo they had previously purchased together. Their marriage was annulled in April 2017. In the documentary, Hadley says Diaz got what he wanted, but at the cost of his freedom. A Toxic Love Story is now streaming on Netflix.
