Why The Meg 2 Is Still Making a Splash on Netflix

Jason Statham has played plenty of tough guys facing down dangerous foes, but few opponents are as outrageous as the prehistoric monsters in The Meg and its sequel Meg 2: The Trench. According to the report, the second film is now a global hit on Netflix, where it ranks as the platform’s 8th biggest movie on FlixPatrol.

The sequel picks up after Jonas Taylor, played by Statham, helped kill the megalodon in the first movie. Now working with the Mana One research facility, he and the team are exploring the Mariana Trench, where the giant shark first emerged. The situation escalates when the crew discovers a female megalodon, then realizes mating season has brought multiple male megalodons into the mix. At the same time, an illegal mining operation adds another layer of danger beneath the ocean.

What made the first Meg work, the report says, was its refusal to take itself too seriously. It delivered exactly what audiences came for: huge shark action, a sizable body count, and Statham fighting against impossible odds. Meg 2 pushes that formula even further, with director Ben Wheatley scaling things up from one megalodon to three, turning the sequel into a louder, more absurdly fun spectacle.

The movie also goes beyond sharks. The report highlights a cold-open set 65 million years ago, where a megalodon attacks a tyrannosaurus after a chain of prehistoric predators is shown feeding on one another. Later, the action expands to include ichthyostega, fast amphibious creatures that attack both in the water and near an island resort, as well as a giant octopus that tears through the boardwalk and even grabs at helicopters. Through all of it, Statham keeps doing what he does best: staring down chaos with the same steady confidence that has defined so many of his action roles.
