If there’s one name we’ve been hearing a lot over the past few months, it would have to be Brad Mondo. The New York City-based hairstylist and colorist’s name is popping up all over YouTube and TikTok as users are cutting and coloring their hair and trying to get a reaction from Mondo.
But Mondo doesn’t offer tips or encouragement. Instead, he watches them in silence and awe with either a shocked smile or a look of utter disgust on his face. Some people have gone as far as to ruin their hair with bleach just to get his attention.
While Mondo started getting people’s attention during quarantine, he’s been active on YouTube and been posting his reactions to at-home hair transformations since 2017. On YouTube he talks through the videos, explaining what’s happening to the person’s hair. And yes, he still makes those videos, but his newfound popularity has come from TikTok’s “duet” format.
After noticing more and more people documenting their at-home hair transformations on TikTok, he decided to jump on the opportunity and began using the platform. He noticed that people didn’t care if he talked in the video, rather, they were there for his facial expressions. But unlike most professional hairstylists and colorists, Mondo doesn’t judge these people’s poor choices—he understands that hair grows back and that they were trying to have fun in the moment.
