Will Ferrell may be known for playing over-the-top characters on screen, but off camera his world is centered on wife Viveca Paulin and their three sons, Magnus, Mattias and Axel. According to the report, the comedian recently joked about parenting on a podcast, but also made clear that he sees his family as the real priority. He and Paulin have also brought their children to premieres, award shows and other public appearances over the years, while trying to keep them grounded in the middle of Hollywood life.
Ferrell and Paulin’s relationship began long before his fame reached its peak. The two met in an acting program at South Coast Repertory in California after Ferrell graduated from USC in 1990. Their connection was not immediate in a straightforward way: they dated, separated into friend territory for a stretch, saw other people and eventually reconnected after Ferrell moved to New York to join Saturday Night Live in 1995. A trip back to California in 1996 helped shift things from friendship to romance, with Ferrell later recalling that a walk in Runyon Canyon and a beer at Paulin’s place made it clear how he felt.
A proposal, a wedding and a family built over time
Ferrell proposed at Woods Cove in Laguna Beach, the spot where they had their first date. He has said the proposal did not unfold smoothly, but he still managed to present Paulin with a 1950s diamond ring he had bought at auction. The couple married in 2000 and later welcomed their three sons: Magnus in 2004, Mattias in 2006 and Axel in 2010. Over the years, Ferrell has said he and Paulin have tried to teach their boys basic manners and respect, especially as they grew up in Los Angeles and around the entertainment industry.
The family’s sense of humor has remained part of the dynamic, even if the kids have not always appreciated their dad’s antics. Ferrell has described using jokes to ease tension at home, while one of his sons has also shared a story about being embarrassed by him at prom.
