San Francisco 49ers spent the better part of the past week trying to trade wide receiver Dante Pettis. But after failing to find any takers before the NFL trade deadline, the organization now decided to release their 2018’s second-round pick outright.

The move was first reported by Matt Barrows, who covers the 49ers for The Athletic.

Despite San Francisco’s injury struggles in the wideout department in 2020, the team rarely turned to Pettis this season. He was mostly limited to special teams and was only targeted once in the passing game.

It recently seemed like there is a chance for Pettis to still play a role with the 49ers, as he returned to the lineup against Seattle Seahawks after three weeks of absence. However, the 25-year-old player ended the contest with a lost fumble during a punt return that most likely sealed his fate.

Dante Pettis, who leaves San Francisco with 38 career receptions for 576 yards and seven touchdowns, is expected to be an interesting option for WR-needy teams (did anyone said Packers?). Despite his shortcomings with the 49ers, he is still considered to have a high ceiling and can be a low risk-high reward for a rebuilding franchise or a Super Bowl contender.
