It was only fitting for the Seattle Seahawks star safety Jamal Adams to make history facing his former team, the New York Jets for the first time since being traded in the offseason.

In the Seahawks 40-3 blowout win on Sunday, Adams recorded a sack on quarterback Sam Darnold and got his season total to 8.5 sacks in 2020. By doing so, he broke the record for most sacks by a defensive back in a single NFL season, previously held by Arizona Cardinals’ Adrian Wilson, who hit the 8.0 mark in 2005.

Adams’ sack came in the second quarter after Darnold tried to scramble and left the pocket. Adams chased him down and managed to get his hand on him before the Jets’ signal-caller left the bounds.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling,” said Adams after the game while also sharing his excitement on social media.

Adams was praised in the post-game conference by Seahawks’ head coach Pete Carroll, who added that the 25-year-old All-Pro “isn’t done” making headlines this season.

“What a fantastic football player,” said Carroll. “And he’s not done yet. He’s going to get some more numbers before the season is over.”

Jamal Adams asked for a trade from the NY Jets early in the year, being unhappy with the way the organization is handling his extension. While resistant to trade their star player at first, Jets eventually caved and traded Adams to Seahawks for a package that includes two first-round picks and a third-rounder.

As his numbers show, Adams is already making the trade worthwhile for Seattle. Besides 8.5 sacks, he also 63 sacks, two pass deflections, one forced fumble and 13 QB hits in nine games.
