Raptors’ Fred VanVleet on His Free Agency: “I’m Trying to Get Paid”

Once he starts his free agency interviews, Toronto Raptors’ point guard Fred VanVleet probably won’t ask many questions about the team’s direction, future plans, or commitment to winning. Instead, as it appears, he’ll be focused on the size of the check they offer him.

During a recent appearance on JJ Redick’s The Old Man and the Three, VanVleet admitted that his only focus in the offseason would be getting as big a contract as he can.

“I’m trying to get paid, man,” VanVleet told Redick. “I’m not shy about that.”

According to VanVleet, he already did the winning part with Raptors, helping the franchise to an NBA title in 2018/19. He now wants to get to the “getting paid” part.

“I won a championship, and now it’s time to cash out,” he added.

Fred VanVleet’s wish to get the most money out of this free agency isn’t surprising considering he entered the NBA as an undrafted free agent and didn’t get the commodity of a big rookie contract. And he actually might see his big payday as this year’s NBA free agency lacks in quality point guards.

It also won’t hurt that VanVleet had a career year in 2019/20, averaging 17.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 1.9 steals per game during the regular season.
