One of the biggest considerations when designing an interior space is colors. With the ability to evoke certain vibes, moods, and emotions, colors really set the scene for a room’s entire atmosphere, making them crucial to think about and choose carefully.

And, as with all facets of interior design, colors come in and out of style all the time, with certain trends coming and going constantly.

For the past few years, interior design colors seemed to be trending toward cool colors like purple and blue. But this year, warm colors are actually making a huge comeback, with red, orange, and tangerine all proving to be huge interior design trends in 2021. While 2020 saw lots of cool greys as the preferred neutral, this season people are choosing to go with more warm, earthy tones like brown and beige.

The result is a space that is inviting, comfortable, and—well—warm!

So how does this look in an actual room? Here are some images that can serve as inspiration for you if you want to decorate a room in your space with warm colors this season.

You may have noticed that interior design in recent years has tended to include more and more green, most often through house plants. Part of this might be related to Drew Barrymore’s sage green kitchen appliances and Kendall Jenner’s green kitchen cabinetry, which left many people green with envy when they revealed them this year.

So, if you’re interested in trying out this trend for yourself and including some more green in your home, which chromotherapy tells us can introduce calm, restoration, harmony, and balance into your life, here are some inspiration photos that will get your ideas rolling.

Gift-giving can be a hard, even grueling, task. How can you be sure you pick something your recipient will actually love? One way of making your gift count is by personalizing it. A personal gift will most likely be cherished. Luckily for us, we don’t even have to be crafty.

Gift brand, Hereafter, aims to create products that can be held, appreciated, and remembered. Founded by designer Yvonne Leung, the small brand offers handcrafted wooden keepsakes that are both unique and sustainable. Their products include hand-bound journals, Christmas ornaments, and wooden cards. They also include customized and personalized items (our favorite is their wooden keepsake boxes).

The items are made in Hereafter’s studio in LA. “Most Hereafter products start out as slats of wood,” explained Leung in an interview with Etsy’s blog. “We laser cut the slats with the designs and break them down into individual pieces. We also hand-stain our walnut keepsake boxes to make sure the engraving pops against the dark color of the wood.”

According to Leung, her business grew over time, beginning with a simple idea: making a unique wooden card, made to last. She then started selling her products at local craft fairs, after which she expanded with sales to online shoppers and store owners. “At first it was all me, but now I know what I’m good at and I have a team that helps me by doing the things that they’re great at,” she relayed. “For me, it’s inspirational to give other people creative freedom. Usually I’ll have a seed of an idea in terms of what I want to see this season, and then I collaborate with my team to bring those ideas to life.”

Over the past decade, the business has grown its product line, created new designs, and introduced special offerings that help people find gifts of love for almost any occasion. As a small company, they also look at their impact on the environment from the moment a new product or design is considered through development, manufacturing, sales, and delivery.

They’ve also committed to donating at least $1 from each online purchase to timely initiatives including social justice, civil rights, women’s rights, and international aid. All in all, their products make for the ideal gift.

Meghan Shimek’s woven wall hangings have an artistic edge to them. More like sculptures than wall hangings, her work—both delicate and textured—reveals the beauty of vulnerability. Rooted in the warm, earthy materials, Shimek’s weaving style allows the fibers to fall into indeterminate patterns. The result might remind of an abstract landscape, comprised of fiber.

Born and raised in Michigan, Shimek took to weaving later in life, after studying history and nutrition first. “I didn’t go to art school,” stressed the artist in an interview with Diary of a Smart Chick, where she describes her work experience as unique. “When my son was born, I had been working for a nonprofit. I decided to stay home with him because my salary wouldn’t cover the cost of childcare in the Bay Area. That’s when I began weaving. I would often stay up nights and wake up early to learn and pursue my craft.”

Since dedicating herself fully to fiber work, Shimek has studied tapestry and Navajo weaving, rigid heddle, and floor loom weaving. Over the years she has developed her own signature weaving style, which she now teaches others through weaving workshops across the world. “There is something so special about sharing your knowledge,” she admits, adding that the learning experience is mutual. “I learn more from my students than they learn from me. I find them to be constant sources of inspiration and I have formed close friendships with many of them.”

Apart from her workshops, Shimek also creates commissions, exhibits her more personal projects and sells her woven hangings on her online shop. “I think everyone who really connects to my work does so on an emotional level,” she admits, explaining that she puts a lot of herself into each piece. “I hope that my weavings can be healing and bring comfort to those who have them,” she notes.

With most of her pieces quite large, Shimek’s process requires her entire body, as she feels the roving through her hands. This makes the creative process much more personal and raw, reminding more of a performance than anything else. Using color, Shimek expresses her personal narrative of moments of comfort, discomfort, and uncertainty.

“I want to move my entire body while I work,” she says, adding that “it is so soothing to feel that every part of me has a role in making my work. When I sit still my back and knees ache, but when I can work on something big, my body feels free.”

Take a look at some of her recent projects in the gallery below:

If anything, this past year has taught us the importance of taking care of our immediate environment—our home, that is. And while a total home renovation comes at a hefty price, making your living area a little more inviting doesn’t necessarily mean breaking the bank. Designer Tatiana Nedialkova argues that beautifying your living space can be as easy as changing a tea towel.

The founder and artist behind the small home goods brand Softer + Wild aims to transform everyday items into magical
flashes of inspiration that add a colorful twist to your home. With her products fabric-oriented, selected designs include tea towels, oven mitts, and aprons. Working closely with textile designer Paula Downes, Nedialkova (who comes from a background of graphic design and illustration), draws and designs the unique screen printed patterns.

Having studied at Chelsea College of Art & Design in London, Nedialkova is based in Britain, where she also produces her line of products. An admirer of simple, clean, beautiful interior design, the brand’s designs are Scandinavian in style with patterns including botanical and naturalistic themes. Another source of inspiration is Bulgarian folk tales.

One of the brand’s more popular products is its unique oven mitts. “They don’t have the typical shape—they’re kind of a long, double glove,” explained Nedialkova in an interview with Etsy’s blog. “In terms of patterns, the nordic design is a best-seller, especially on the oven mitts,” she added. “I think people like it because the design is so different from what you usually get on a product like this. My botanical prints also do well. They have this timeless floral appeal; there’s something really classic about them.”

And while Nedialkova’s add that extra something-something to your home, they also make for the perfect gift. “I’ve made things in the past and given them as gifts to friends,” she notes. “And then when I visit a few years later, it’s really nice to see the objects being part of their environment and habits and life. In the same way, it was very exciting when people started to buy my art—to think it really ends up in someone’s home and can transform their space in some way.”

You can purchase yourself a Softer + Wild item on their online store or via Etsy.

London-based designer, entrepreneur, and cognitive-behavioral therapist, Natalie Manima, understands the importance of a vibrant, positive environment. “A house is more than just a mere shelter,” she quotes John Saladino on her website, “it should lift us emotionally and spiritually”.

The mastermind behind the home goods line Bespoke Binny, Manima embraces the notion that “home is where the heart is”, stressing that a home is a reflection of you is essential to your wellbeing. “I’ve always been into home stuff,” she admitted in an interview with the Etsy blog. “I love watching renovation shows on TV. So I started making things for my own home”.

After getting positive feedback from her friends, she decided to start selling her creations, launching her Etsy shop in 2013, and going to craft markets and trade shows. According to Manima, she decided on a home decor line after seeing African prints used in clothing, but not in home goods.

Her intuition proved right. These days her brand is thriving and includes a variety of home goods, such as lampshades, pillows, throws, aprons, and oven mitts—all made to add a splash of color to your home. Being of Ghanaian descent, Manima’s products are inspired by Africa, using African prints.

“I think that not enough people know about the beauty of African prints,” says Manima. “I’m going to get on my soapbox now—I think they get seen as something seasonal, for summer, or something tribal, in terms of fashion. They’re not seen as something to wear for everyday. But these prints are for everyday!”

In addition to African prints, she also uses wax prints – fabrics that have patterns that are printed on over the wax. “They are like batik, and they have errors on the fabric that are considered beautiful—the imperfections are part of their beauty,” she notes.

We’re halfway through 2021, which means that there’s already been enough of the year to look back and point out some of the biggest interior design trends of 2021. Here are three of them that you can incorporate into your home before the year is up.

Blue

The biggest color trend in interior design right now is blue, especially in shades of navy. This color is both soothing and relaxing, although too much of it can be a bit depressing, so don’t forget to add in some splashes of bright and light colors for balance.

Natural Light

More than anything, this year, people are all about letting the light into their homes, even going so far as to forgo curtains or using sheer curtains as a way to block as little natural light as possible. So let that sunshine in and enjoy your serotonin boost!

Natural Textures

Speaking of nature, another huge trend this year is natural textures and colors like earth tones, terra cotta, marble, wicker, and wood. This is a great way to play with texture and add an inviting, homey touch to your space. Start by getting natural textured home accessories as a low-commitment way to play with the trend.

A word of caution to our minimalist readers: 2021 is all about patterns. After a year of buckling down and staying put, this summer is all about exuberant detail and pattern-filled designs. There’s also a shift away from edgier, streetwear influences, with more botanical and floral themes coming to place.

If you’re looking for a way to reintroduce color and detail to your home environment, we recommend taking note from the South African label Skinny laMinx. With an emphasis on colorful patterns that are in part inspired by African fabric, Skinny laMinx’s product range includes cushions and pillows, decor, paper goods, and even accessories. All of the designs are screen printed in Cape Town, and everything is cut and stitched by a small sewing team in the studio.

Run by illustrator and designer Heather Moore, the brand was named after Moore’s Siamese cat. “In general, I like design that is concise and fits its purpose,” Moore shared once in an interview with Sweet Paul Magazine. “If it manages to do these things while being elegantly exuberant too, that makes me happy.”

Indeed, happiness seems to be a driving force behind the brand. “Pattern makes us happy, color makes us feel good!”, reads the brand’s Instagram bio caption. Relying heavily on primary colors, you can expect to see nature-inspired themes like flowers and leaves throughout her fabric designs.

According to Moore, she doesn’t look hard for inspiration. Rather, inspiration, it seems, seeks her! “It’s kind of silly to say this, but I really am inspired by just about anything and everything!”, she said, adding that anything from the holes in a piece of cheese to an IKEA catalog can spark inspiration.

If you’re seeking happiness and color in your day-to-day (and of course you’re seeking!) follow the brand on Instagram for some inspiration and head to their online shop.

Formally, organic design is considered a style of product design that takes as its starting point organic, flowing natural forms. But organic design can also come into play through graphic design and art in general, with the goal to harmoniously integrate both human and natural motifs. Using color palettes derived from nature or incorporating botanical illustrations into your work is a great way of evoking that feeling of being immersed in nature.

Designer duo Elsa and Tyler Lang (aka Always With Honor) will show you how it’s done. Based in Portland, the two create visual systems and brand identities that emit warmth, optimism, and a sense of wonderment. With an emphasis on nature, their work doesn’t stop at simple nature-inspired themes but aims to be holistic, acknowledging the importance of sustainability and environmentalism.

As part of their work, the Tylers donate 1% of their income as a studio every quarter to a cause that reflects their beliefs. They’re also activists and have added, for instance, activism posters to their website which are available for free download to print and share. According to their website, their goal is to be open and willing to learn about the changes needed in order to make our planet a better place. Their organic designs, in that sense, are meant as a conversation starter.

“Nature was a big part of both of our upbringings,” Elsa remarked once in an interview with The Great Discontent. “There’s so much wonder and beauty in nature,” added Tyler. “It’s the highest form of design. Just look at a leaf—you can’t design one more perfectly than it already has been. Every single curve and notch has a specific role and purpose. And as a designer, you’re always trying to uncover and chase that kind of perfection in your own work.”

Indeed, their work communicates ideas through illustrations of nature, the use of organic color palettes, and an emphasis on organic shapes, objects, and lines. Inspired by nature, their work is a reminder to be more mindful of your surroundings. “If you can’t be out in it all of the time, why not draw it, or make it a part of your work?” asks Elsa. “So that’s what we try to do as much as we can.”

This Brand Will Inspire You to Add Patterns to Your Home https://toppoptoday.com/this-brand-will-inspire-you-to-add-patterns-to-your-home/ Thu, 20 May 2021 09:39:00 +0000 https://toppoptoday.com/?p=16966 A word of caution to our minimalist readers: 2021 is all about patterns.
