]]>There’s nail artists, and then there’s Juan Alvear. Based in New York, Alvear’s work might be considered more of an art form than a beauty trend, reminding of post-modern structures and sculptures than mere manicures. According to Alvear himself, his work is meant to push the boundaries of what it considered aesthetic, indeed of what is considered fashionable.
“I like pushing the boundaries of what is expected and what can be seen as beautiful,” he remarked once in an interview with Coeval Magazine. “It’s a balancing act of the two.”
Having studied sculpting and painting at Cooper Union, Alvear’s practice draws from other forms of artistic expressions. “My nail practice is meant to be surreal and uncanny because it usually diverges from functional and leans into performative,” he notes. According to Alvear, his work was a byproduct of continual experimentation and exploration, resulting in the highly popular Instagram page, “Nails by Juan”.
Since launching his unique project, Alvear has been approached by a-list celebrities, working with artists like Lil Nas X, Rihanna, and Erykah Badu. His nail art has also featured in music videos of artists like Rosalía, Arca, and Charli XCX. “Every design is different and serves different purposes,” Alvear explained, “because there isn’t a single objective I can’t say I have one favorite.”
Recent projects include translucent chrome, in-lodged amethyst nails and floating heart nails that make for a bitter sweet sort of effect. Inspiration sources also vary and depend on the project.
“I draw inspiration from color, form, texture, and how these things meet,” says Alvear. “The real motive behind my work is to give a new, fantastical point of view”. Indeed, his work will make you question the very function of nail art.

But looking professional doesn’t necessarily mean sporting boring nails. With summer around the bend, you might want to add a pop of color to your beauty routine. Nail artist Betina Goldstein will inspire you to take care of your nails, if anything. Based in Los Angeles, Goldstein is a full-time editorial and campaign nail artist, with clients that include megastars like Billie Eilish, Zoë Kravitz, and Bella Hadid.
“I love designs that challenge me and really require a lot of tiny details and a lot of patience,” Goldstein remarked once in an interview with Elle. Her attention to detail is noticeable when scrolling through her Instagram page. Goldstein often includes behind-the-scenes videos of her manicures, which provide great content in and of themselves.
Her styles vary—anything from a deep dark red nail polish to more embellished nails that aren’t for the faint of heart. “I focus on designs that are more contemporary and they have intricate detail and dimension, but don’t necessarily overwhelm your nails,” she explained.
“It’s all about the placement of the nail art,” says Goldstein. “It’s really minimal. At the same time, some of my nail designs are really out there: I’ll do chains on the nails—but with a sheer base.” For her more out-there designs, she includes craft store-bought materials.

Micro manicures became popular partially because we were so dependent on ourselves and most of us can’t do complicated nail art at home. It also looks universally good and doesn’t need to be changed very often to go with different outfits.
The new micro manicure trend comes in various colors, from classic white (like very thin French manicure) to grey, black, and brights. With a little practice, you can easily achieve the look at home. All you need to do is paint the top of every nail with the thinnest coat of polish and cover the rest of the nail with a transparent or nude top coat. You can also use tools like French manicure tape to help you be more precise.

]]>Manicure trends can get pretty wild, but every now and then, we get a hit that’s actually wearable and looks nice for everyday occasions. This is the case with milky nails, a new trend among celebrities it’s on its way to becoming the most popular manicure style in 2020.
Girls around the world went crazy for it after Lizzo posted a few short videos of her makeup, jewelry, and nails on her Instagram Stories on December 6th. Her nails look lovely with a neutral, white polish topped with a peculiar finish known as “milky.” It got us curious and we checked; there are currently over 21,000 Instagram posts tagged #milkynails and the number just keeps growing.
From what we see, the look can be achieved in a number of techniques in any good salon. Some nail artist use acrylic powder, others do it with gel polish, while some combine the two techniques. Nail artist Victoyria told Allure that “the process was very simple since it is colored acrylic. I laid that one color and topped it with a gel topcoat. A lot of people like using polish to create a milky white look, but I prefer acrylic.”
