Hollywood’s biggest stars saved their best red carpet looks for the Academy Awards on Sunday night, and impressed us with some epic fashion choices. From mermaid glamour to head-to-toe metallics, here are five red carpet trends that stole the show at this year’s Oscars.

Back to Black

Black was one of the most popular colors at this year’s Oscars, and many stars found a way to put a fun twist on this timeless trend, including Margot Robbie, Carey Mulligan, Sandra Hüller, Eva Longoria, and Camila Alves.

Glittering Metallics

Metallic dresses were shining brighter than ever at this year’s Oscars. America Ferrera, Anya Taylor-Joy, Zendaya, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Lupita Nyong’o were only some of the stars bringing shimmering vibes to the red carpet.

Mermaid Glamour

Mermaid-like gowns in gentle shades of seafoam greens and baby blues were having a moment at the Oscars. We can thank Lupita Nyong’o, Emma Stone, Hailee Steinfeld, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Florence Pugh for putting this trend on the map.

Structured Designs

Many dresses at this year’s Oscars featured peplums, shoulder pads, and other structured details, including the ones worn by Emma Stone, Ariana Grande, Sandra Hüller, Florence Pugh, and Eva Longoria.

Gloves Return

Gloves added a touch of sophistication to many of our favorite looks at the Oscars. Carey Mulligan, Michelle Yeoh, and Camila Alves used them to make a glamorous fashion statement.

This year’s Academy Awards brought many amazing fashion trends our way, but white gowns were definitely dominating the red carpet. At least a dozen stars attended the Oscars wearing white, and here are some of the best looks in this color.

Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian actress to win best actress at the Oscars, and she picked up her trophy in the angelic feathered white gown by Dior.

Sofia Carson

It’s no secret that Giambattista Valli is Sofia Carson’s favorite designer. They joined forces again for her look at the Oscars, and she hit the red carpet in a dreamy white gown that looked just like a wedding dress.

Halle Berry

Berry was one of the stars who hit the red carpet in white but still managed to look edgy. Her Tamara Ralph number featured glittering rose gold rosettes, a high-neck collar with a peekaboo cutout, and a dramatic high slit.

Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling embraced some of the biggest red carpet trends of the year at this year’s Oscars and hit the red carpet in a white Vera Wang dress with an exposed corset and off-the-shoulder sleeves.

Ariana DeBose

Ariana DeBose put a maximalist twist on the “white gown” trend and turned heads in an Atelier Versace gown featuring a plunging neckline, mesh sleeves, and dramatic bejeweled details.

Nominations for this year’s Academy Awards have finally been unveiled and the list of contenders raised a few eyebrows. This year’s Oscars are bringing many snubs and surprises our way, and here are a few that got everyone talking.

Surprise: Brian Tyree Henry, “Causeway”

The best-supporting actor category brought several surprises our way, and seeing Brian Tyree Henry sneak into this field with his role in Causeway was one of the biggest shockers.

Snub: Tom Cruise – “Top Gun: Maverick”

Top Gun: Maverick received an impressive number of nominations at this year’s Oscars, but Tom Cruise failed to get an acting nod despite carrying the film on his shoulders.

Surprise: Andrea Riseborough, “To Leslie”

You probably haven’t even heard of Andrea Riseborough’s film To Leslie before A-list stars started showering it with praise on social media. This unusual campaign apparently worked, and Riseborough went from being an Oscar underdog to the first-time nominee.

Snub: “Babylon”

Despite being considered one of the main contenders at this year’s Oscars, Damien Chazelle’s star-studded epic Babylon only scored three nods in technical categories.

Surprise: Paul Mescal, “Aftersun”

Paul Mescal deserves all the attention coming his way for his tender and quiet performance in the British drama Aftersun, and it’s truly a joy to see Oscar voters giving him some love.

Snub: Female Directors

Female-directed films were largely shut out of this year’s Oscars, with zero nominations for the best director, and only Women Talking managed to make it to the best picture field.

From ravishing reds gowns to menswear-inspired ensembles, this year’s Academy Awards gave us more amazing fashion trends than we can count. If we had to pick one that stole the show, dramatic ruffled gowns would make the cut, and here are some of the stars who gave this trend their seal of approval.

Jada Pinkett Smith

Smith delivered one of the most over-the-top looks of the entire evening in her emerald Jean-Paul Gautier gown with a dramatic train adorned with rows upon rows of ruffles.

Billie Eilish

Speaking of dramatic dresses featuring more rows of ruffles than we can count, Eilish also embraced this trend in her oversized black Gucci gown.

Kirsten Dunst

Dunst proved you can wear layers of ruffles without looking too extravagant in her silk-and-tulle ruffled strapless gown by Christian Lacroix.

Nicole Kidman

Kidman proved it’s possible to strike the right balance when it comes to ruffles. She hit the red carpet in a light blue Armani Privé bustier gown, accented by a ruffled peplum skirt.

Jessica Chastain

Chastain embraced ruffles in a more subtle way, just like Kidman, and still managed to look magnificent. She picked up her first Oscar in stunning gold and pink Gucci gown, adorned with an organza ruffle-trimmed hem.

The nominations for the Academy Awards are in, with Power of the Dog in the top spot with 12, but some of our favorite movies and performances of the past year failed to make the cut. Take a look at some of the biggest snubs and surprises at this year’s Oscars.

Snub: Lady Gaga, “House of Gucci”

Many experts were predicting that Lady Gaga will take the Oscar for the best actress for House of Gucci, but that will be impossible because she didn’t even get a nomination.

Surprise: “Drive My Car”

Drive My Car was a lock for the best international feature film nomination, but no one could’ve predicted it would take three more nods—including best picture and best director.

Snub: Denis Villeneuve, “Dune”

The Academy has shown a lot of love to Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune, giving it a total of 10 nominations. That’s why it’s even more shocking to see Villeneuve miss out on a nomination for the best director.

Surprise: Jessie Buckley, “The Lost Daughter”

Jessie Buckley failed to score nominations at most major award shows for her work on The Lost Daughter, but the Academy voters decided to nominate her in the best-supporting actress category over Belfast’s Caitriona Balfe.

Snub: “Passing”

Rebecca Hall knocked it out of the park with her directorial debut Passing, but it just wasn’t enough for the Academy. This movie was overlooked in all the categories, and the omission of the supporting actress Ruth Negga was especially jarring.

This year’s Oscar race is heating up as many of the year’s highly-anticipated movies premiered at major film festivals, and another one just threw its hat into the ring. Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth recently saw the light of day, and it’s receiving some major Oscar buzz.

Coen’s take on one of William Shakespeare’s seminal plays had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, where it was met with overwhelmingly positive receptions. It currently holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with high praise for its leads Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, but is it poised to become an Oscar front-runner?

It’s too early to say how well will Macbeth fare in the Best Picture race since the field was pretty crowded even before it came out. The Power of the Dog was hailed as one of the front runners before Belfast won the People’s Choice Award at TIFF, and some people are still putting their money on Dune since it broke the mold for sci-fi and action movies.

Whatever happens in the race for Best Picture, Washington and McDormand will most likely get nominations for their stellar performances. You can decide for yourself if this film is worth the hype when it gets a limited theatrical release on Christmas, or wait until January 14, 2022 to see it on Apple TV+.

The Oscar race is heating up as the year’s most anticipated movies premiere at major film festivals. Some of them will be released by Netflix, and the streaming giant already shared trailers for some of its biggest Oscar contenders.

Don’t Look Up

One of Netflix’s most star-studded films in recent memory, Don’t Look Up stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as two low-level astronomers trying to warn humanity of an approaching comet that could destroy planet Earth. Its A-list cast also includes Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, and Meryl Streep.

The Power of the Dog

Jane Campion’s latest film premiered to rave reviews in Venice, and it sees Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, and Jesse Plemons deliver performances of a lifetime. It centers on a charismatic rancher, whose life turns upside down after his brother comes home with a new wife and her son.

The Hand of God

A strong contender for Italy’s best international feature Oscar, Paolo Sorrentino’s latest feature also premiered to rave reviews in Venice. It’s been described as “a tale of fate and family, sports and cinema, love and loss” set against the backdrop of Naples during the 80s.

After the disappointing viewership numbers of this year’s Oscar ceremony, Academy Awards bosses are ready to shake things up. Next year’s show will feature several major changes, and here are three novelties you should keep an eye on when the Oscars return next year.

Best Picture Shake-Up

Instead of nominating between five and 10 films in the top Oscar category, the Academy is making room for a guaranteed 10 contenders for the best picture. By doing so, they’ll make room for the beloved crowd-pleasers to get nominated, and potentially draw in a bigger audience come Oscar night.

Music & Sound

The Academy introduced several changes in the music and sound categories. When it comes to the best original song, a maximum of five songs from a single movie can be submitted for this award. The best original score category is also up for a shake-up, and a score must be comprised of a minimum of 35% of original music to be eligible, down from 60%.

COVID-19 Impact

Several new rules were introduced this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic will still stay in place for the 94th Academy Awards. Direct-to-digital releases and films that open in theaters in at least one of the six major U.S. cities will be eligible for next year’s show, set to take place on March 27th, 2022.

The Oscars are the biggest award show of the year and it’s when celebrities bring out the glitz and glam. One of the few in-person award shows this year, the stars looked absolutely fabulous and they seemed to have been inspired by the award of the night—the Oscar trophy. Gold was the color of the night and we saw a lot of it on the red carpet. The best actor and actress nominees weren’t afraid to make a bold statement and here were some of the Oscar-inspired looks from the night.

Leslie Odom Jr.

Posing with his wife Nicolette Robinson, the One Night in Miami best actor nominee wore a double-breasted Brioni suit with a matching shirt and tie. The jacquard fabric was woven with gold silk and pure 24-karat gold thread, making him look like a million bucks.

Carey Mulligan

Best Actress nominee for Promising Young Woman Carey Mulligan brought sparkle to the red carpet in a strapless Valentino Haute Couture gown featuring a bandeau top and dramatic full skirt covered in gold sequin.

Andra Day

Like Carey Mulligan the Billie Holiday best actress nominee wore a gold gown, but Andra Day’s fitted Vera Wang dress was super daring showing tons of skin with its bold cutouts.
